Amber Pet Collars
Wearing amber can have beneficial effects on humans – and even dogs and cats! With spring comes glorious sunshine, warmer weather — and ticks! Flea and tick products and medications include ingredients like permethrin, pyrethrin, and fipronil. These are pesticides that kill insects by paralyzing their nervous system. Incidentally, this is also how nerve gas works! These chemicals have the same effect on an insect’s nervous system, animal’s nervous system, or a human’s nervous system.
Wait! Nerve gas???
A recent study by the NRDC (National Resources Defense Council) showed that high levels of pesticide residue can remain on a dog’s or cat’s fur for weeks after a flea/tick collar is put on an animal. Residue levels produced by some tick/flea collars are so high that they pose a risk of cancer and damage to the neurological system of children up to 1,000 times higher than the EPA’s acceptable levels. Children are particularly at risk from these pesticides because their neurological and metabolic systems are still developing. They are also more likely than adults to put their hands in their mouths after petting an animal. So, children are more likely to ingest the hazardous residues. Furthermore, chemcial tick and flea collars only protect the area on or around a pet’s neck. Considering ticks tend to feed and hide primarily in pets’ armpits, groins, bellies and rear ends, it’s not hard to see why they’re so ineffective.
However, there’s an inexpensive, non-toxic alternative!
Amber collars – as tick and flea repellents – work in two ways for dogs (and cats), and they do it naturally!
The Grounded Goodwife duo share how the collars actually work in their Amber Pet Collars workshop.
Do amber pet collars work?
Ehris and Velya live in Connecticut, the home of Lyme disease, but never see fleas or ticks on their pets! All of their pets wear amber collars – and all the humans in the house wear amber bracelets/anklets.
